Whether reinventing public spaces, improving infrastructure to encourage active transportation, or reimagining what an office space can offer its employees, these projects from around the world captivated attendees with their creative design thinking and impressive impact on health and engagement. The event also featured a panel discussion on the pivotal role public spaces play in fostering a range of holistic health outcomes. Moderated by WNYC’s Paige Cowett, the panel highlighted the expertise of Linda Gibbs, Principal at Bloomberg Associates, Justin Garrett Moore, Executive Director of the NYC Public Design Commission, and Dr. James Sallis, Distinguished Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of California, San Diego and this year’s winner of the Thought Leadership Award. Winning projects illustrate how an emphasis on physical, mental, and social wellbeing can be achieved—through shifts in regional policies, grassroots advocacy campaigns, and the leveraging of health-promoting design as a key market differentiator. View All Winners 2015 Winner Fulton Center, designed by Grimshaw Architects and Arup Jurors 2017 Jury David Burney Chair of the Board at the Center for Active Design and Associate Professor of Planning and Placemaking at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture David J. Burney, FAIA is Associate Professor of Planning and Placemaking at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture and the Chair of the Board at the Center for Active Design. Prior to these positions, he served as the Commissioner of the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) from 2004 to 2014, where he launched a citywide “Design and Construction Excellence Initiative” with the goal of raising the quality of design and construction of public works projects throughout New York City, and helped spearhead the development of the Active Design Guidelines . Mr. Burney was educated at the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and at the University of London. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the AIA NYC Award of Merit in 2014. More Less Madeline Burke-Vigeland Principal at Gensler Maddy Burke-Vigeland, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, principal at Gensler, brings passion and commitment to every project—from landmark preservation and building renovations to new buildings and education and cultural institutions. Maddy has taught at Pratt Institute, Columbia University, New York University and The New York School, and she was a guest faculty member at Harvard University’s Leadership Institute for Legislative Advocacy conference in 2012. More Less Susan Chung Senior Research Associate at ASID Susan Chung, Ph.D., is the senior research associate at the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) where she connects design and research for improving human experiences in the interior environment. Valuing the needs of design practitioners, her work at ASID is based on translating research on current interior design issues into applicable design implications and directing research projects that create meaningful positive impacts on human experiences. She comes from an interior design and behavioral research background and focused on design attributes related to creativity in workplace environments for her doctorate degree in Human Behavior and Design at Cornell University. More Less Linda Gibbs Principal at Bloomberg Associates Linda served as New York City Deputy Mayor of Health and Human Services from 2005-2013. Supervising the city’s human service, public health and social justice agencies, she spearheaded major initiatives on poverty alleviation, juvenile justice reform and obesity reduction. “Age Friendly NYC”, a blueprint for enhancing livability for older New Yorkers; and “Young Men’s Initiative”, addressing race-based disparities facing Black and Latino young men in the areas of health, education, employment training and the justice system, are two of the collaborative efforts she shaped to address significant social challenges. Gibbs also improved the use of data and technology in human service management and spearheaded efforts to improve contract effectiveness and create evidence-based program development. During her tenure, New York City has been the only top-20 city in the U.S. whose poverty rate did not increase while the national average rose 28%.
