Whether reinventing public spaces, improving infrastructure to encourage active transportation, or reimagining what an office space can offer its employees, these projects from around the world captivated attendees with their creative design thinking and impressive impact on health and engagement. The event also featured a panel discussion on the pivotal role public spaces play in fostering a range of holistic health outcomes. Burney, FAIA is Associate Professor of Planning and Placemaking at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture and the Chair of the Board at the Center for Active Design. Prior to these positions, he served as the Commissioner of the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) from 2004 to 2014, where he launched a citywide Design and Construction Excellence Initiative” with the goal of raising the quality of design and construction of public works projects throughout New York City, and helped spearhead the development of the Active Design Guidelines . Mr. Burney was educated at the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and at the University of London. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the AIA NYC Award of Merit in 2014.
